Registry Pilot Project is Launched Today
A Joint Initiative to Improve Cancer Data
Collection System in Indonesia
Jakarta, 11 October, 2004
Cancer Registry pilot project, an initiative
to improve hospital cancer data collection
system is launched today with the start of
training for representatives of ten selected
hospitals. This pilot project which is
initiated by PT. Roche Indonesia together
with its partner, POI (Persatuan Onkologi
Indonesia) and YKI (Yayasan Kanker
Indonesia) aims at developing a functional
national cancer registry. “Indonesia, as the
fourth most populated nations in the world,
has an urgent need today for a functional
National Cancer Registry,” said Prof.
Zoebairi Djoerban from the Indonesian
Oncologists Society (POI) representing the
parties involved in the initiative.
Cancer registry can be defined as an on
going systemic collection, analysis and
interpretation of cancer data essential to
the planning, implementation and evaluation
of clinical and public health services. The
end point is the application of these data
to the treatment, prevention and control of
cancer.
In Indonesia, the available cancer registry
today is hospital-based registry and
pathology based. Hospital based is compiled
by Ministry of Health and published annually
– the latest one is October 2003 – while
pathology based is compiled by the
Indonesian Association of Pathologists (IAP)
– the latest report was published in 1999.
PT. Roche Indonesia together with its
partner, Indonesian Society of Oncology
(POI) and Indonesian Cancer Foundation
(YKI), supported by Schlumberger and
Microsoft are sponsoring the establishment
of a functional national cancer registry,
started with a pilot project in ten selected
hospitals.
“This is part of our corporate social
responsibility, particularly in the oncology
area where we are known as a world leader.
When the pilot phase is completed, we
–Roche, POI and YKI- would like to donate
the software and system to the Indonesian
society,” said Dr. Jack Pradono Handojo,
Head of Medical Management, PT. Roche
Indonesia and Project Officer for Cancer
Registry. He continued, “This project is
under the umbrella of Taking Oncology into a
New Heights, a Roche initiative in the
oncology field which covers Compassionate
program where we provide competitive price
of drugs, Cancer survey and Cancer
registry.”
There will be a networking of pilot
hospitals with a central database that will
receive cancer data on a monthly basis via
internet/e-mail. The data collected based on
the regular form endorsed by Ministry of
Health.
Roche will provide the software – ReKan Indo
ver.2004, developed internally by Roche -
and the hospital licenses including training
for users, technical support and data
publication support while the hospitals as
source data producer will provide system and
data officers. Schlumberger, a world-class
oil company, will contribute its data
management expertise as the Central Data
Repository where consolidated data will be
compiled and published for the public and
stakeholders.
The ReKan Indo database software is a tool
that enables timely collection, analysis and
reporting that would be extremely beneficial
not only for hospitals but also for policy
makers and epidemiologists.
